| Burung Kumkum Kelabu |
Spesies lain yang gampang dilihat masyarakat adalah burung kumkum putih atau disebut juga Pergam Laut. Bahasa Inggrisnya Pied Imperial Pigeon (Ducula bicolor). Burung ini banyak terdapat di pulau Waigeo di Raja Ampat. Terkadang burung kumkum putih sering terlihat bertengger di pohon yang sarat buah di tepi pantai.

Ada juga burung Kukum Knob yang dalam bahasa Inggris disebut Spice Imperial Pigeon. Burung ini hidup di pulau-pulau kecil yang bertebaran di Kepulauan Raja Ampat. Burung ini ukurannya mirip dengan kumkum kelabu tetapi memiliki tonjolan di atas pangkal paruhnya. Saya sering melihat burung kumkum spice ini saat memandu wisatawan ke Raja Ampat. Karena burung kumkum suka bertengger di dahan pohon yang tinggi maka untuk melihatnya, kita perlu menggunakan spotting scope atau teropong (binoculars).
Hutan Papua adalah kawasan yang sangat kaya dengan berbagai spesies burung tropis baik yang berbulu indah, dan bersuara merdu. Dewasa ini aktivitas wisata pengamatan burung semakin didukung oleh pemerintah sebagai salah satu cara untuk menciptakan lapangan kerja sekaligus membantu masyarakat dalam melestarikan hutannya.

🐦 Birdwatching in Sonder

Notable Bird Species
Sonder is particularly known for its variety of endemic and tropical birds. Birdwatchers, often utilizing binoculars (8x42mm or 10x42mm are common), can hope to spot:
* Endemic/Near-Endemic Birds:
- Black-crowned White-eye (Zosterops atrifrons)
- Gray-sided Flowerpecker (Dicaeum celebicum)
- Yellow-sided Flowerpecker (Dicaeum\ aureolimbatum)
- Pale Blue Monarch (Hypothymis\ puella)
- Sulawesi Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia\ doreya\ albicapilla)
- Sulawesi Pygmy Woodpecker (Dendrocopos\ temminckii)
* Commonly Observed Birds:
- Yellow-billed Malkoha (Rhamphococcyx\ calyorhynchus)
- Sooty-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus aurigaster)
- Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis)
- Sahul Sunbird (Cinnyris\ frenatus) and Brown-throated Sunbird (Anthreptes\ malacensis)

A birding trip to Sonder can easily be combined with visits to other renowned North Sulawesi birding destinations like Tangkoko Nature Reserve and Mount Mahawu.
🐛 Butterfly Watching in Sonder
The high-elevation farmlands and forest edges around Sonder are also excellent sites for observing the vibrant world of Lepidoptera. Butterflies are essential pollinators and their diversity is often highest in complex vegetation structures like the local agroforestry habitats.
Butterfly enthusiasts can expect to see several large and beautifully patterned species, many of which are characteristic of the Sulawesi region:
* Nymphalidae (Brush-footed Butterflies):
- Blanchard's Tree Nymph (Idea blanchardii) - sometimes referred to as Blanchard's Ghost.
- Blanchard's Wood Nymph (Ideopsis vitrea)
- Celebes Leafwing Butterfly (Doleschallia polibete celebensis)
- Manado Yellow Tiger Butterfly (Parantica menadensis)
* Papilionidae (Swallowtails):
- Celebes-banded Swallowtail (Papilio gigon)
- Meyer's Jay (Graphium meyeri)
- Lime Swallowtail (Papilio demoleus)
The visibility of butterflies is often best during the sunny periods of the morning and afternoon walks through the farmlands and forest outskirts.
