Hiking and Birdwatching in Sorong of West Papua

Visitors who travel to Raja Ampat will first have to fly to Sorong city. The city is located in mainland West Papua province of the Republic of Indonesia. I often receive questions from tourists whether there are other natural attractions around Sorong regency which they can see before or after visiting Raja Ampat islands.
Female Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus)
Female Eclectus Parrot
The lowland forest in the suburb of Sorong regency is a new destination for tourists who want to explore the biodiversity of tropical rainforest. The forest is the natural habitat of birds, reptiles, insects, mammals and marsupials. I introduced it for the first time on the internet in November 2014.
Male Lesser Birds of Paradise
A male Lesser Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea minor)
Birdwatching
Tropical birds of New Guinea that thrive in lowland rainforest can be seen in the valley. Shining flycatcher (Myagra alecto), Sulphur crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), Pinon Imperial Pigion (Ducula pinon), Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus), Western crowned pigeon (Goura cristata), Blyth's hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus), Rufous-bellied Kookaburra, Pink-spotted Fruit Dove, Moustached Tree Swift, and Lesser birds of paradise (Paradisaea minor) are some of the many birds of New Guinea that visitors can watch while walking through the forest.
Western-crowned Pigeon (Goura cristata)

Hiking through the rainforest of Klasow valley is easy because the land is flat. However, the footpath to the display tree of Lesser Birds of Paradise is steep and slippery. It is approximately one hour on foot from the village. Visitors have to walk for at least 1 hour to reach the lek of the birds that is located near Klasow river.
Visitors can watch the birds in the mornings and in the evenings. Male lesser birds of paradise compete against one another to win the heart of female birds.
Lesser Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea minor)

When the weather is good, the courtship dance performance usually lasts for 3 hours from 6 to 9 a.m.
After watching the paradise birds, visitors could walk back to the village and do birdwatching along the way. Binoculars, spotting scopes and laser pointer will be very useful during the morning walk.
Leg-cramps and muscle pain are not very common among tourists, but there were some cases where  tourists experienced them. Dehydration, salt depletion and fatigue of long day walking on the trails caused these severe leg cramps. When these signs happened, I immediately stopped the hiking tour and returned to our guesthouse. In the jungle guesthouse, I served instant noodle and gave it to my client who suffered it.  The soup of the noodle contains salt that would reduce the cramps. The noodle soup resupplies her body with new electrolytes. To ease the soreness or pain in the muscles and joints, I gave gentle massage using coconut oil. I applied the oil on my palms, warmed them up and then gave relaxing massage to the tensed musles.
Massage also increased the flow of blood that brings nutrients and oxygen to underlying tissues. It relieved muscle tension, and stiffness. Birding could be continued around the clearing area of the forest.

Birding in the Forest Edge

The clearing area around the jungle village is a good place for birding in the afternoon particularly between 16.00 to 18.00 local time. Birds such as friarbird, moustached tree swift, large fig parrot, red cheek parrot, and black lorry often fly and perch in the nearby trees. Children in the village with their sharper eyes can spot birds in distant trees faster than most of the visitors.

What you need to bring:
  • Water shoes or trekking shoes and long sleeve clothing that will protect you from insect bites when you sleep. You also need t-shirt that is suitable for tropical climate that is usually hot during the day
  • Torch
  • Rain poncho
  • Insect repellent lotion. Apply it on your skin, and the clothes that cover your body, including areas over your neck, armpits, chest, crotch and ankle. This is very important to protect you from tiny insects that can go through your clothes and bite your skin.
  • Bring binoculars or digital camera with super telephoto lens if you want to take pictures of the animals that live in the jungle.
  • Extra batteries for your camera.

Itinerary of Rainforest Tour:
Day 1
Transfer from Sorong city to lowland forest of Sorong by 4WD pick-up car. You will stay in a guesthouse (basic accommodation) in the jungle. Birding can be done directly along the forest edge. After dinner, I or local villager will accompany you to have a night walk in the jungle to find wallaby. Sometimes Papuan frogmouth or fruit bat can be seen too. We will use flash or torch. If you are too tired to do the night walk, we could do it in the second night.
Day 2
Early in the morning, after breakfast, you will leave your camp to walk deeper into the jungle to explore its biodiversity. Deer, wild pigs and wallaby live in the jungle of the valley. Our targets for this morning are Lesser Birds of Paradise and Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise. If we are lucky, we could see them. At night, after dinner, local guide can accompany you to find cuscus possum that usually comes out at night to find food or to mate.
Day 3
We will go trekking and birding in the hill forest. Usually, Hooded Butcherbird, Western-crowned Pigeon, Black-capped Lory, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Red-breasted Paradise Kingfisher, Frilled Monarch and King Bird of Paradise.
Day 4
This is your last birding day, the easiest way to explore the forest is to walk around the forest through old logging tracks that are located near the village. Birds such as Pink-spotted Fruit Dove, Large Fig Parrot, Magnificent Riflebird, usually come to villagers' garden to find grains such as corn, peanuts and green beans. In the afternoon, 4WD pick up truck will transfer you back to Sorong city.
Road leading to Klaglass forest of Klasow valley

Costs:
This depends on the number of participants and duration of the tour. Traveling in a group of 3 or 4 people will make the price cheaper.

The Lowland forest is located in the west of Sorong city. Visitors need to rent a 4WD Pick-up truck to reach the valley. You could contact us if you want a more customized trips and different itinerary.

Rainforest Tour organized from Sorong Town

rainforest tour in West Papua
Trekking in the forest of Sorong regency of West Papua
I often receive emails from visitors who want to go trekking in the rainforest near Sorong town. Usually they want to combine their diving trip in Raja Ampat with jungle tour in the mainland New Guinea particularly near Sorong city.
I can organize a land tour or jungle tour to several destinations in West Papua.
  • For visitors who only have got 2 to 3 days in Sorong, the destination that I offer is Klasow valley.
  • If they have got more than 3 days, the rainforest that I will offer is Tambrauw mountains (lowland forest along Syuan river or pristine forest in Ases valley).
Klasow Valley
This valley is only 1 hour away from Sorong town and another hour on foot to reach the jungle village of Malagufuk. Visitors who book the tour to Klasow valley can start the tour early in the morning. Wild animals that live in the valley are wallaby, cassowary, deer, wild pigs, soa-soa, and various species of birds including lesser birds of paradise, blyth's hornbills, sulphur crested cockatoo, western crowned pigeon, golden myna, yellow faced myna and a lot more. Visitors are advised to bring D-SLR camera with telephoto lens or a bridge camera with super telephoto capability such as Nikon Coolpix P900. The rainforest of Klasow valley is flat. So, it is suitable for anybody who cannot go trekking in sloppy mountains.

Tambrauw Mountains
holiday tour in West Papua's rainforest
Camping site in the jungle of Tambrauw mountains
This is the destination for visitors who have got more than 3 days to spend in the jungle. Tambrauw mountains are covered by huge tropical rainforest from its coastal area up to the mountainous regions. For coastal region, the usual destination where I bring my guests to is Syuan river. It is suitable for camping and trekking. Tents will be built at the bank of the river. During the tour, visitors can enjoy swimming and birdwatching as well as learning the medicinal functions of herbal plants that grow in the jungle.
Another destination in Tambrauw mountains is Ases valley. To reach the valley, visitors need to go by a 4WD car for 6 hours. After that the trip will be continued on foot for 2 hours. Deers, wallaby, cassowary bird, tree kangaroo, and a lot of species of birds live in the valley.
Western-crowned Pigeon
Western Crowned Pigeon in
the jungle of Klasow valley
As a tourist guide I have arranged a lot of rainforest trips for visitors who want to explore the tropical jungle of West Papua for several days. That's why I have got tents, air mattresses, rechargeable lights, cooking, eating, and other logistical gear that are needed for the tour. I also have contacts with local villagers and 4WD car drivers that I need to organize a jungle tour or expedition.
So, if you are interested in taking a rainforest tour that is organized from Sorong town, please, contact me (Charles Roring) by email to: peace4wp@gmail.com

Snorkeling in Mansinam island of Manokwari Regency

Mansinam is a small island that is located near Manokwari city (the capital of Papua Barat province) in West Papua. It has been a famous destination among Christian pilgrims because it was the first place in New Guinea where Christianity was preached to the indigenous people. Every year on 5 February, thousands of people gather on the island to celebrate the event.
The tropical island of Mansinam is also surrounded by coral reef that hosts thousands of species of marine animals.

Marine Life in Mansinam Island
Early this month, I went snorkeling at the southern part of the island. I brought a Canon G1X with its housing to take pictures of the marine life. There were a lot of fish that I saw during my 2 hours snorkeling activity. Some of them were Striped Surgeon Fish, parrotfish, damselfish, convict surgeonfish, butterflyfish, Moorish Idol, Clark's anemone fish, several species of Christmas tree worms, and a lot more. There were blue sea stars and black urchins and sea cucumber too.
Here are some pictures that I made during the trip:

Snorkeling Tour and Rainforest Tour
As a tour guide, I can organize a Snorkeling Tour and Rainforest Tour for anybody who is interested in taking a vacation in Manokwari and other parts of West Papua province.
I suggest that you come here in a group of at least 2 to 4 people. More is better because all of you can share the cost. I can organize such trip for a solo traveler too.

Where is Mansinam Island
Mansinam island is located in Dore bay near Manokwari city.  It is only a ten-minute ride by water taxi.
Manokwari is the capital of West Papua province
Manokwari - the capital of Papua Barat province

Manokwari is a city inside Dore bay with Mansinam and Lemon islands

How to get there?

  • It is easy to go to Mansinam island or Manokwari city (both are located very close to each other).
  • Fly from your country to Jakarta city
  • Take a domestic flight to Manokwari city. Garuda, Sriwijaya, Batik, Nam Air, and Wings Air (member of Lion Air group)
  • We will meet you at the airport and organize your trip to see coral reef in Mansinam island and other parts in Dore bay and the tropical rainforest in Arfak mountains.

Snorkeling Season in Manokwari

Manokwari city is a nice destination visitors who like snorkeling, sightseeing, hiking, and wildlife watching. I have guided a lot of tourists from various European, North American and Asian countries to enjoy swimming, snorkeling and sightseeing in West Papua. There are several coral reef sites in around Manokwari which are the natural habitat of hundreds of species of reef fish.
My favorite sites are Mansinam, North Coast of Manokwari, and South Coast of Manokwari. While swimming over the reef, I and the visitors could see parrotfish, butterflyfish, lionfish, moorish idol, anemonefish, boxfish, wrasse, surgeonfish, grouper and a lot more.
Because Manokwari city is located inside Dore bay, the snorkeling activity can be done almost all year round.
coral reef and fish in Manokwari
Snorkeling Pictures from Manokwari
In my recent trip, I guided some British, German and Italian tourists to Mansinam and the north coast of Manokwari. We enjoyed swimming over the reef flat and drop off area. The visibility was very good especially in the mornings. I brought my point and shoot camera Fujifilm XQ2 that I had put inside its waterproof case. With that photographic device, I was able to take pictures of marine creatures that I saw during the snorkeling trips.
Manokwari is the capital of West Papua province in the Republic of Indonesia. It can easily be reached by plane from major cities in Indonesia. If you want to come here, you need to take an international flight from your country to Jakarta (the capital of the Republic of Indonesia). After that you one choose one of the airlines in this country that provide regular flights to Manokwari such as Sriwijaya, Batik Air and Lion/ Wings Air.
For avid snorkelers, I highly suggest that they bring their own device such as mask, snorkel, and fins. Bringing a good underwater camera is highly recommended. A small one like Olympus Tough TG-5, or Nikon W300 will give significantly enhance your snorkeling experience.
In addition to snorkeling, I also offer a trip to the forest where visitors can enjoy hiking, bird and wildlife watching.
If you are interested in visiting Manokwari and want me (Charles Roring) to be your guide, please, contact me by email to: peace4wp@gmail.com or you could also send text message to my number: +6281332245180.

Slideshow of Bird Pictures from West Papua

The tropical rainforest of West Papua is very rich of birdlife. As a tourist guide, I often guide visitors to lowland and higher montane forests. We travel to various areas in this province to watch and take pictures of birds of paradise and other tropical birds. In the past, I used Nikon Coolpix P500, Fujifilm HS50EXR, Canon 200D with Tamron 150-600mm lens. Now I only used cell phone that was attached using an adapter behind a spotting scope or binoculars.

Birding in West Papua of Indonesia
Red Bird of Paradise
Most of the pictures were published in my blogs and websites as well as my facebook naturelife page and personal accounts.
In this slideshow, I reused the photographs again and added them with my newest pictures. After adding transitional effects and instrumental music to the slideshow, I published it on youtube.

Birds play very important role in the ecosystem of rainforest. They disperse seed, they provide fertilizer through the poops that they release everyday and they do pest control by eating insects, small mammals and reptiles in the forest.
Birding or birdwatching tourism in West Papua grew well before the Covid-19 pandemic. It stopped suddenly when government did not allow foreign tourists to travel into Indonesia. Government plan to allow foreign tourists to visit this country again in 2021.
I hope that the above slideshow of Birding in West Papua will attract interest of anyone who watches it so that he or she will be interested in traveling to this beautiful island.
If you are interested in traveling to West Papua and want me to guide you and organize your tour, please, contact me Charles Roring by email to: peace4wp@gmail.com or by whatsapp through this contact link.

Blyth's hornbills are called Burung Taun-taun

Hornbill can be watched in most part of New Guinea and its surrounding islands.
Blyth's Hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus)
I frequently see Blyth's hornbills while trekking in the jungle around Manokwari. The best spot to watch this bird is in the lowland and lower montane forests. In West Papua, we call it burung taun-taun. It is a big bird that likes to eat fruits of nutmeg and ficus trees. Blyth's hornbills and other birds play very important role in the ecosystem of rainforest. They disperse seeds of the fruits that they eat. They can fly in a group of two, four or even thirty birds. I organize birding tours to rainforest in West Papua for birders who want to see hornbill and a lot of other tropical birds that are endemic to this region. Hornbills like to sleep in  high trees after sunset time. In order to avoid predators, perhaps snakes, Blyth's hornbills choose the tip parts of the twigs. The one on the top of this post is a male.
Blyth's hornbill birds (Rhyticeros plicatus)
Male and Female Blyth's Hornbill in the rainforest of Manokwari
I have guided birdwatchers from Europe, North Americas, Asia and Australia to watch Blyth's hornbill in Manokwari, Tambrauw Mountains, Sorong and Raja Ampat islands. The best times to watch birds are in the mornings and in the afternoon before sunset. I and some of my friends built basecamps deep in the jungle for birdwatchers to stay for several nights in the tropical rainforest of West Papua to watch birds and other wild animals such as cuscus possum, wallaby, deer, soa-soa lizard, butterfly, beetles, and etc.

Birding Tour in Manokwari and Tambrauw Mountains

If you are physically fit, then you can take a birding tour with me to rainforest in Waigeo and its surrounding islands. I have seen various species of tropical birds there. Some of them that I can identify are Red Bird of Paradise (paradisaea rubra), Wilson's Bird of Paradise, Palm Cockatoo, Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, Red-cheeked Parrots, Variable Goshawk, Western Crown Pigeon, Oriental Dollarbird, Yellow-faced Myna, White-breasted Wood Swallow, Hooded Butcherbird, Pied Imperial Pigeon Pinon Imperial Pigeon, and etc.
In addition to animals, visitors who take a birding and wildlife watching tour with me can also see a lot of unique plants in the villages and forest that we visit including banana, papaya, mango, jackfruit, matoa, durian, and rambutan trees. Wild flowers such as Beach Hibiscus, terrestrial orchid spathoglottis plicata, or various colors of hibiscus can be seen in the region.

Flights to Sorong and a birding trip to Raja Ampat

  • If you live in the United States or in Europe and want to watch birds in Raja Ampat, and its surrounding forest, first, you need to fly to Jakarta - the capital of Indonesia.
  • Second, you take a domestic flight served by Sriwijaya Air, Batik Air or Garuda to Sorong city. I will meet you at the airport and organize your bird and wildlife tour to the forest of Raja Ampat.

Pinon Imperial Pigeon

Pinon Imperial Pigeon (Ducula pinon) live in almost all lowland areas of New Guinea. It eats fruits from the forest. The indigenous Papuan people call it Kumkum.
Pinon Imperial Pigeon (Ducula pinon) in the forest of Klasow valley, Sorong regency - West Papua
This bird is often hunted as the source of protein by the indigenous Papuan people. In recent years the population of kumkum has been decreasing rapidly particularly near cities and towns due to sport hunting activities by city dwellers who use air gun. Such practice has to be stopped by local authorities if they are really serious in preserving tropical rainforest environment.
Watching birds in the jungle is often very difficult because birds are hidden behind branches and leaves of trees. So, the best spots to see birds are along the banks of rivers or forest clearings near a village that are created by local people as their vegetable or fruit gardens. To enhance birding experience in West Papua, birders need a good pair of binoculars, spotting scope and a field guide entitled "Birds of New Guinea."

Lesser Birds of Paradise in Watercolor

This is the picture of Lesser Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea minor) that I created using Derwent Watercolor Pencils. The birds live in forest of New Guinea (the largest tropical island in the world). I watch the birds while I guide tourists or birdwatchers on a hiking and birding tour in Klasow valley of Sorong regency or lower montane forest of Arfak mountains in West Papua region.
If you are interested in taking a rainforest hiking and birding tour in Klasow valley of Sorong regency of West Papua - Indonesia, please, contact me (Charles Roring) by email to: peace4wp@gmail.com or send message to my whatsapp number +6281332245180.

Paradise birds and other birds play very important role on the ecosystem of rainforest. They disperse seeds from fruits which they eat to all corners of the forest.
I introduce ecotourism in this region to economically empower the indigenous people and at the same time preserve tropical rainforest environment.
This watercolor artwork can now be ordered as printed materials in a lot of products on my Tropical Art Store. One of them is the following kitchen towel decorated with the painting:

Golden Myna from the Forest of Sorong Regency

Here are the pictures of Golden Myna (Mino anais) that I saw in the lowland forest of Klasow valley. It is located approximately 60 kilometers in the east of Sorong city. The best time to find this bird is between 16.00 up to 18.30 local time in the clearing areas that are made by local villagers for their vegetable garden and housings.

Trekking West Papua's Rainforest

New Guinea is the largest tropical island in the world. It has attracted the attention of world explorers since hundreds of years ago. Scientists such as Alfred Russel Wallace (1858) came to Dorey bay in Manokwari and trekked the rainforest of the region to find birds of paradise. The official website of Papua Insects Foundation has got some information about Prince Leopold III and Princess Astrid from Belgium who visited Manokwari, and Arfak mountains from December 1928 to May 1929.

Today tens of species of birds of paradise are still being hunted for their beautiful feather. They are traded and collected by wealthy people in Indonesia. Preserved skin of birds of paradise are often found in the living rooms of high ranking government officials or businessmen. To curb the hunting of birds of paradise and the logging of tropical rainforest, I introduce trekking trips to tourists who are interested in taking tours in the jungle. When tourists go trekking in the rainforest of West Papua, they will be guided by some Papuan villagers. I will accompany them as an interpreter. It is not only birds of paradise which trekkers will see. Our rainforest is high in bio-diversity. Deers, boars, cuscus, monitor lizards and kangaroo also live in the jungle.
Here are some destinations that I promote:
  1. Klasow valley in Sorong regency. It is a recommended destination for visitors who want to watch such birds as Palm Cockatoo, Red-cheeked Parrot, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, Western-crowned Pigeon, Pinon Imperial Pigeon, Orange-breasted Fruit Dove, Brown Cuckoo Dove, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Common Paradise Kingfisher, Black Lory, Blyth's Hornbill, and a lot more. Klatomok village is the recommended place to go for visitors who want to spend a few days in the valley watching various species of tropical birds.
  2. Mountain Range of Tambrauw - this is an important destination in the world for anybody who is interested in studying about tropical rainforest. Ayapokiar village, Mount Sakofsiah and Ases valley are the place where wild animals such as soa-soa monitor lizards, cuscus possums, and birds can be watched.
  3. Dopi river. It is a 3-hour walk from Manokwari town. A camp by the river for hikers or trekkers has been built for tourists.
  4. Mesirrokow forest. It is a 1-hour car trip from Manokwari town. After arriving at the bridge of Asai, travelers can start trekking by walking along the banks of the river. There is a waterfall located deep in the jungle.
  5. Warmarway forest in Arfak mountains - you have to be physically fit to trek the steep slopes of this mountain range.
    How to get there?
    • Fly from your country to Indonesia's capital - Jakarta.
    • Take a flight to Sorong city (for points 1 and 2) or Manokwari city (for points 3, 4, 5).
    • Contact me by email to peace4wp@gmail.com
I will meet you at the airport or at the hotel where you stay to arrange your trekking trips to the above destinations.

    Birding in West Papua

Here is the picture of Sulphur Crested Cockatoo that I saw while I was guiding Gauri, a lady from India on a 2-week nature tour, snorkeling, and birding trip in Raja Ampat, Sorong regency, and the Arfak mountains. We visited remote uninhabited islands, villages and walked through empty road in the jungle to find tropical birds, butterflies, cuscus possum and wild flowers. We also enjoyed swimming and snorkeling at secluded white sandy beaches of Raja Ampat to see its coral reef and colorful fish.
    Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita)
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo in Waigeo island
While in Raja Ampat, we did not go to places that had been frequently visited by tourists such as southern area of Waigeo, Kri, Gam, Mansuar and Arborek islands. Instead, we went to eastern region of Waigeo. We went to Sopen village and explored its nearby islands, i.e. Waim and Mamiaef. We also did rainforest tour through a river in the north of the village and then continued our trip southward to Yen-Papir Karst. Here, went hiking to the top of one of the islets to see its beautiful scenery. Standing on the top of the rock island inside the karst formation, we felt as if we were looking over a huge lake.
